He has an old computer running windows 98 and Norton Internet security 2006 just slows down his computer far too much. Is there any software that will do an effective job without reducing the performance of his PC much? Thanks in advance for your suggestion.

avg antivirus that will not slow your computer down but it is the most crap antivirus
Norton AV 2006 is a HOG on resources - I ditched it for McAfee AV. That is not as bad. Check PC World site for more
My computer geek friend recommends Trend Micro. If you go to their website, you can run the software right from their website for free. It's called Housecall. It's not like one of these websites that lets you run a free scan but doesn't let you fix what you find. This one even allows you to repair what's found.
use clamwin. It is open source, GPLed freeware from sourceforge. It will not slow down the computer because it does not have an realtime scanner. Like the antivirus programs of old days. You run it manually whenever you want to virus scan.
