I downloaded a free protection and I believe it was AVG, the very next day I encountered a virus, and while the program tried to get rid of it, it also deleted operating files, so the program potected my computer from the virus, but it wouldn't stay on when I restarted it, kept turning off and on continually. Had to take it in to get fixed, and was told not to use free ones, that's why theyre free. You can get good protection for 50 bucks or so. Well worth it. Sorry I don't trust the freebies and wouldn't want to chance it again.

AVG virus protection is free and not just a trial, i would recommend you get a firewall too and some adware remover for free. There is a free protection list here.
