AVG Free Edition seems to work for me. Had it for almost 2 years with no known problems.
AVRIL is also another one that has a free edition. Was reported in CR recent issue.
I would likr to know this answer also. I use to use AVG, but AVG will stop the free version starting in Jan.

Good FREE Antivirus protection doesn't exist. Pay for one like McAffee. It's great.

http://www.free-av.com is a good one that's free but based on a commercial product.
The best I've found is Avast Antivirus (www.avast.com). It comes with a Virus Database Recovery Generator and it's recommended by many ISPs.
