Okay, one day norton had an exclamation point, but when i went to go fix it, it said no updates were found. So I did it manually by going to the website downloading the update and opened it then it got fixed, but now i have to do it frequently is there something i can do to fix this?

maybe subscription of your norton has expired or autoupdates have been disabled. Problem with norton is that its engine and detection is not that good as it was in its heydays. What it detects it really deletes but what it do not detect it stays on your computer forever. Better have another antivirus if your subscription has already expired. Get kaspersky antivirus or avira antivir premium.
yes you have to download information from the virus data base of new viruses that have been invented.
With AVG i have to update from the data base before scanning
